- Cans:
- long shelf life due to the high oxygen barrier;
- costly storing of empty container;
- high costs in shipping the empty/full container.
- Plastic trays:
- reduced shelf life due to the poor oxygen barrier;
- costly storing of empty container;
- high costs in shipping the empty container (but lower than cans).
- Flexible pouches:
- almost all preserved food can be packed in pouches;
- high shelf life (similar to cans, when film is aluminum coupled);
- price of pouches is lower then the price of cans.
- easy and economical handling of the empty pouches.
- the pouch can be easily opened and there are "no sharp edges".
- the thermal treatment is reduced enhancing product quality.
- the reduced thermal treatment allows power savings in the sterilisation process.
- the waste quantity (empty used containers) is the lowest.
